Your next customer journey may have a machine in the middle

The shift is from channel optimisation to intermediary-aware engagement. Marketers should make messages semantically clear, strengthen first-party destinations and in-product channels, and ensure offers, preferences and customer state are structured enough for AI systems to interpret correctly.

For years, CRM teams optimised the last mile: subject lines, send times, channel mix and creative. AI intermediaries are beginning to insert themselves into that last mile. Inbox and operating-system layers can summarise, prioritise or suppress content before the customer sees the original message.

That changes what 'delivered' means

A message can technically arrive and still lose the competition for interpretation. The new question is not only whether a human opens the email. It is whether the intermediary understands what the message is, who it is relevant to, what action is available and whether it deserves to surface.

Design for legibility, not keyword tricks

This is not an argument for writing robotic copy. It is an argument for clean information architecture. Make the offer explicit. Keep dates, eligibility and value unambiguous. Maintain reliable preference and identity data. Build strong owned destinations such as apps, web experiences, in-app messages, Content Cards and wallet surfaces where the brand controls more of the interaction.
